A Small Shadow on the Water

The shadow of a tiny cat continuously flickered like a fish over the running water. This cat was doing nothing in particular. Just thinking about life. She was never staying on a certain topic very long in her head, always moving on to another. Finally she shook her head to clear her daze of thoughts.
Bea stood and glanced about, as if searching for something. She didn't know what exactly, though. She just felt like she needed to look for something.
A friend maybe? Possibly. She hadn't spoken to another cat in... what... three moons? Five? She couldn't remember.
Oh, well. Maybe she wasn't meant to have friends. Maybe she was better off alone.
Deep inside, though, she hoped that wasn't so.

A fluffy white head peeked out of the bushes behind Bea. The fox, an albino with red eyes, stepped out into the ocean and barked curiously as it wagged its fluffy white tail.

Was that... a bark she had heard? It was quite close, too. Bea sat there, unmoving. Maybe if she stayed still it wouldn't notice her. Or... at least it would kill her quickly. Possibly.
Then she turned halfway, and caught a flash of white fur. An odd color for... a fox, that was what she thought it was. She realized how stupid she was being by standing around thinking about it, and not running away from it. She forced herself into motion, dashing along the edge of the running water to get away from the fox.

Berry barked in surprise as the cat dashed away. The fox gave chase, using her most surprising skill. "Waaaaaaaaaaiiiiiiiiiiiiit!" she screeched in an odd form of cat.

This fox could speak cat? Maybe it wasn't trying to eat her. No, it was probably just trying to trick her! Bea sped up, and then began to climb a tree.

Berry sped up. The cat was climbing a tree. "For Starclan's sake," she muttered under her breath. Digging her claws in, the albino fox struggled to climb the trunk.

"Why are you chasing me?" Bea asked the strange fox, half expecting it to reply in her tongue, rather than just getting barked at, which was what she would actually feel more comfortable with. She didn't like the idea that a fox could speak in her language. But she was glad at the same time, because she could maybe communicate with it and figure out something to get the fox to spare her life. Also, if it knew the language of cats, then it might have respect for them and wouldn't prey on her.

Berry dropped back to the ground and placed her front paws on the tree. "Because you were running," the fox answered, as if it should be obvious.
